Autos and taxis in Jaipur to get GPS facility soon!

Auto rickshaws and taxis in Jaipur will now have GPS trackers installed in them. The Rajasthan Transport Department and the state police have geared up to install Geo Positioning System (GPS) in auto rickshaws and taxis.

The system will enable the authorities to track the autos and control their operations as well. According to a senior transport department official, the blueprint has been prepared for installation of GPS in all autos. The new system will start from Jaipur and later on it will be implemented in other cities like Jodhpur and Kota.

The Traffic Control Board comprising officials from police, transport department and Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has given its approval for implementation of GPS.

The department has identified the kind of GPS that will be used in the state. The Pink city has over 12,000 autos and there will be one control room.

“There are many companies in the country which manufacture, market and install GPS in autos and taxis. The department will soon start process of inviting expression of interest for this project,” the official said.

“We hope that the GPS in all autos here will be installed soon as we have all approval and only the process has to be started,” he added.

Many states including the national capital Delhi have implemented GPS in autos and others have also initiated the process.

Swap your old driving licence with a ‘Smart Card’!

The state transport department is now planning to issue new smart plastic card licenses soon in the state, which will be user-friendlier.

Looking like the ATM cards, these plastic card licences will first be issued in Jaipur from August 15 and will soon be made available in other parts of the state as well. The new licence will have a microchip fitted in it, which will have all the information about the holder of the license. When this chip will be scanned it will show all information pertaining to the holder of the license. The card will also have a hologram and state transport department’s logo. MoU for this was signed on Friday by transport department ACS Umaro Salodia and officials of National Informatics Centre to manufacture such smart cards.

According to Sh.Pawan Arora, additional commissioner, Transport Department, “These cards will initially be introduced in Jaipur and will be issued in a phased manner all across the state,”. They will be more durable and secure than the licenses issued presently because of various features and will be a solution for the old licenses, which get damaged over a span of few years. People whose licences are in tattered condition will also have an option to get them replaced with plastic cards. “Old licences which are in bad shape can also be changed,” said an official in the department.

Presently, states like Madhya Pradesh and Punjab are issuing driving licences on plastic or metal cards.
